Imagine if every country in the world were represented by a flower—sunflower, rose, bellflower, dahlia, or forget-me-not. Christine Henry, an expert in plants and their symbolism, explored this concept by delving into the natural traits and meanings of different flowers. To design this scarf, she researched the unique connections between each country and the flowers native to those regions. She then created a world map, placing endemic species over their respective locations. This map serves as a poetic reminder of the importance of preserving biodiversity.
The Hermes Scarf:
Each Hermes scarf features up to 27 vibrant colors, carefully crafted through a meticulous process.
It all starts with a hand-drawn design, which is then transferred to screen printing. Hermes engravers break down the design into
individual films—one for each color. For a single scarf, this can mean up to 47 different films.
Meanwhile, high-quality Brazilian silk is imported to France, where it’s carefully woven—a process that can take up to three months.
Pigments are expertly mixed and boiled to achieve the perfect shades, and then the screens are used to apply the colors and patterns onto the silk,
which is stretched across the printing table. Each screen applies a new layer of color and design. Once dry, the fabric is steamed to set the patterns in place.
The final step involves cutting the silk into squares, which are then hand-rolled and sewn by skilled seamstresses using silk thread to create the iconic edging that defines an Hermes scarf.
Creating one of these scarves can take up to 18 months, and they are treasured by collectors for the expert craftsmanship and incredible attention to detail.
