TIDS ‘n BITS:
“A woman with good shoes is never ugly.” – Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel, renowned for her iconic designs and perfumes, was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France.  A legendary fashion designer and style icon, she revolutionized the fashion industry with her innovative creations. Coco introduced masculine hues into women’s fashion and replaced the elaborate, restrictive styles of the time with elegant, simple silhouettes that prioritized comfort and functionality, all while flattering the female form.

In 1910, Chanel founded the House of Chanel with a millinery shop in Paris, soon followed by a boutique offering sportswear that became an instant hit.  This success firmly established the brand in France. Her creations, including the iconic “Chanel Suit” and the “Little Black Dress,” solidified her reputation and extended her influence across Europe and America.

In 1921, Chanel launched her first fragrance, Chanel No. 5, named after the sample number she favored.  The scent became a timeless symbol of femininity.

In 1955, she introduced the revolutionary “2.55” quilted leather handbag, featuring a gold chain strap that allowed it to be worn both by hand and over the shoulder. That same year, she debuted her famous two-tone shoes in beige with a black toe cap, a design that had a slimming effect, lengthening the leg and shortening the foot.

Chanel continued to create until her death on January 10, 1971, at the age of 87, leaving behind a celebrated legacy. Her vision was carried forward when Karl Lagerfeld became the artistic director of Chanel in 1983, ensuring the brand’s enduring influence into the 21st century
